National Gallery

The National Gallery's extensive art collection is spread throughout the city in seven exhibitions and buildings.

1. Kinsky Palace (Staromestske namesti 12, Prague1) holds the prints and drawings collection. The Kinsky Palace was built in 1755-1765 on the site of three existing buildings with early medieval foundations. The palace has been under the National Gallery's administration since 1949.

2. St George's Convent (Jirske namesti 33, Prague 1) the Mannerist and Baroque art. Prince Vratislav I founded it in the eastern part of Prague Castle in 921.

3. St Agnes's Convent (U Milosrdnych 17, Prague 1), has medieval art from Bohemia and Central Europe. The St Agnes Convent was founded by the Princess Agnes, sister of King Vaclav I in 1231. It was the first Gothic building in Prague.

4. Sternberg Palace (Hradcanske namesti 15, Prague 1), gained art works of the Old Masters. The National Gallery began to use and renovate the Sternberg palace in 1946.

5. Veletrzni Palace (Dukelskych hrdinu 47, Prague 7), the modern and contemporary collections from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Surrounded by the decorative Art Nouveau buildings of Holesovice, the austere Veletrzni Palace is a daring work of art in itself. It was the first official Functionalist building in Europe. Plans to turn the building into the home of the National Gallery's modern art collection were launched in 1979. Since its reconstruction in 1995, the building has housed the National Gallery's collections of modern and contemporary art.

6. Zbraslav Chateau (Bartonova 2, Prague 5), the collection of Asian art from Japan, China, Tibet, India and other. Zbraslav Chateau, originally a Cistercian monastery founded by Wenceslas II in 1292.

7. House at the Black Madonna (Celetna 34, Prague 1), museum of cubism. House at the Black Madonna, unique cubist building, was built in 1911-1912 at the place of ruined old house (originally called House at the Black Madonna).

Gallery Rudolfinum (Alsovo nabrezi 12, Prague 1)

The "House of Artists" hosts a wide range of temporary exhibitions, each running several months. If you're at all a fan of contemporary art, it's always worth a visit, whatever aspect they are covering at the time. The Rudolfinum is also a home of Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
