Museum of Torture Instruments (Krizovnicke nam 194/1, Prague)
If you can't quite grasp how these grisly instruments work, the helpful illustrations should make their operation painfully clear. More than 60 implements of pain from all over Europe are on display accompanied by explanations in several languages.

Rock Therapy (Animate Theater, Na Prikope, Prague 1)
Subtitled "Small Story From the Great Time of the Beatles" this non-verbal show uses film projection, music, dance and puppetry to present "a loosely poetical black-theatrical production of the animated film Yellow Submarine". It is, if nothing else, a unique synthesis of various Czech theatre genres. Must be seen to be believed, whether you're a Beatles fan or not.

Prague Wax Museum (Melantrichova 5, Prague 1)
Bohemia's great figures all come together in one happy community here, with lifelike waxwork representations of Franz Kafka, Rudolf II and The Good Soldier Svejk, making for a wonderful stroll through Czech history. The presence of Bill Clinton, Elton John, Tina Turner and other modern icons is a little more difficult to fathom.

Sex Machine Museum (Melantrichova 18, Prague 1)
An exhibition in a slightly different sense, this is one show definitely not for the kids. The museum traces the history of gratifying instruments from their origins to the modern day. While not entirely without cultural merit, the overall package is rather bizarre. There is predictably, a gift shop. On an area of three floors there are more than 200 objects and mechanical appliances on view, a gallery of art with erotic themes, a cinema with old erotic films, erotic clothing and many other things pertaining to human sexuality.

Krizik Fountain (Vystaviste area, Prague 7)
Each summer evening, the fountain's 50 pumps, 3,000 water jets and more than 1,200 lights put on a dizzying display of hydro-mechanic choreography. The musical accompaniment ranges from classical to heavy metal to Disney tunes. Recent productions have included live folk dance troupes and a melodrama based on James Bond plots.

Operetta (Divadlo Broadway: Na Prikope 31 • Divadlo Ta Fantastika: Karlova 8)
The Czech love of operetta knows no limits, except perhaps the number of performers willing to take part in the latest rock opera at locations around town. It began with Romany and Juliette, proceeded to Dracula and is still going strong with a romping Monte Cristo. Check The Prague Post for performance times.

Parks and Gardens

Petrin Hill (Mala Strana, Prague 5)
The views from here are so beautiful that susceptible romantics have been known to spontaneously kiss passers-by, including the monks from Strahov monastery. Best in spring when the orchards are in bloom.

Vysehrad (V Pevnosti 159/5b, Vysehrad, Prague 2)
Far enough from the centre to be largely tourist-free, Vysehrad is the perfect place to be alone with your thoughts. Sights include the Neo-Gothic Church of Sts Peter and Paul, the graves of Dvorak and Smetana and reconstructed fortifications. There's very little shelter from inclement weather.

Wallenstein Gardens (Valdstejnske namesti 3, Prague 1)
General Albrecht von Wallenstein razed two dozen houses to make way for his expansive "backyard". Among the gardens' stranger elements is the grotesquery on the southern wall, with stalactites imitating a limestone cave. The cries you hear, all around you are the resident peacocks

Kampa Island (Mala Strana, Prague 1)
Mala Strana residents love to sunbathe, sip wine and play frisbee on the island green of the Little Quarter in summer. However, they also like to smoke marijuana, beat drums well into the night and use the grass for a public dog toilet, so watch your step.

Franciscan Gardens (Vodickova, Prague 1)
Stop here after pounding the Wenceslas Square pavement and join the pensioners and office workers at lunch, quietly filling the benches behind the Church of Our Lady of the Snows

Prague Castle Royal Gardens (Valdstejnske namesti 3, Prague 1)
These formal gardens were laid out by Ferdinand I in the 16th century. After mulling over the Belvedere summer palace and the Communist-revised frescoes on the Ball-Game Hall, slip down to the Stag Moat.

Strelecky Island (Strelecky ostrov, Prague 1)
Lose yourself watching the Vltava rush past. Early risers can watch the sunrise strike the castle. In summer there's a popular outdoor cinema and live-music stage here.
